Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
