A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
