A defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified matters in any vehicles.
Security Guidance for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret information while riding in China-made vehicles.
The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a issue in every modern vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
The broader security situation underscores the significance of robust measures and caution in all aspects of government activities, from vehicle usage to discussions practices.
