Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
