The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
