2K Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Revitalize Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Shift Comes After Poor Response

Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last fall.

Recently, the company's top executive a key figure notified staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the need for a clearer direction.

Ismailer stated that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to address player expectations.

A Pattern of Key Hires

This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the complete content from the president's announcement:

Team—

I understand you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative creators we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”

Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s the game playtest was enlightening. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It revealed the need for a clearer identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to consideration and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its promise to our audience.

The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. Following some time of conversations, Ben starts with us on next week.

Ben’s leadership and background in the PVP shooter space is vast, having devoted the last 15 years producing and overseeing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in greeting Ben next week. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to come.

The President

Experience of the New Leader

The appointee presently holds the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Vision

The upcoming game was announced in last year alongside a early access event. At the time, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Face the competition with unique powers, stakes, and tests that shift every session. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and hope your team can secure victory? The option is up to you."

Project Ethos has not yet received an official launch window or platforms, but players can expect further news as development advances.
